Nature and Your Classroom: Ecology and Stewardship Series at Circle X Ranch

When:

  • 8:30 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2012 to teachers study mediterranean climate maps3 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012 (OVERNIGHT)
  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012
  • 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012

Where: Circle X Ranch, 12896 Yerba Buena Rd., Malibu, CA 90265. About hour from Los Angeles.

  • March 10th session will take place in an urban setting off-site.
  • April 23rd session will take place in a Los Angeles area off-site locaation.

Who: Classroom teachers, grades 6-12 who seek professional development, lessons, and resources with a specific emphasis on science and outdoor environmental education.

Program includes:

  • Ready-to-use resources for the classroom 
  • Overnight accommodations in large dome tents, with Ranch House and showers nearby 
  • All meals during overnight session, plus lunch on March 10th and dinner on April 23rd
  • A $350 value generously funded by Boeing

Program highlights:

  • Discover hands-on lessons and activities 
  • Develop a stewardship action plan 
  • Explore the Santa Monica Mountains
  • Receive a $150 stipend upon completion of the series

Series description:

 

Teachers study climate change map

Ecology and Our Mediterranean Climate - February 11-12, 2011 at Circle X Ranch (8:30 a.m. Sat. to 3 p.m. Sun.)

During this overnight two-day session, we will concentrate on ecology and evolution in the Mediterranean climate, and will include hiking and hands-on activities focused on increasing content knowledge.

Stewardship - Saturday, March 10, 2012 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)


This session will meet in an urban
setting where we will participate in a hands-on, stewardship activity with a Los Angeles area partner organization. The latter portion of the day will consist of a project creation workshop, aimed to help classroom teachers create a stewardship action plan and develop curriculum to be implemented in the classroom. Lunch provided.

Sharing Best Practices - Monday, April 23, 2012
(5 p.m. - 7 p.m.)


This off-site session must be attended in order to receive the stipend. Participants will share and evaluate your stewardship projects and/or curriculum implementation.  Dinner provided.

 

 

 

What to wear: Casual comfortable outdoor clothes. A pair of hiking boots or sneakers.


What to bring for the overnight portion:

Day pack: a backpack  big enough to fit all your personal items for a day hike. 

Rain gear

Warm knit or fleece cap and hat with a brim

Two (2) reusable water bottles

Pants and Shirts:  These will be used to hike in.

Jacket & extra layers of warm clothing

Hiking/Walking shoes

Toiletries: shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen and personal medication 

Sleeping bag, pillow, and pajamas: you will be sleeping in large dome tents on sleeping pads.

Bandana & Towel

Flashlight & batteries

OPTIONAL: Binoculars, Field Guides, Camera, Notebook & pen, Alarm clock, Sunglasses
